A clinical perfusionist is a highly skilled person, qualified by academic and clinical education, who operates a heart/lung machine during open-heart surgery or any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace the patient's cardiopulmonary/circulatory functions. The clinical perfusionist ensures the proper management of the patient's physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables.
